NATIONAL SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK 2016 BRINGS AWARENESS TO EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS

When they face no competition, public schools are often unresponsive and unwilling to accommodate the wide array of student needs that exist in every community. National School Choice week calls attention to the country’s proliferating educational options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. Even as the East Coast recovers from a record-setting blizzard, National School Choice Week is going strong, with an unprecedented 16,140 events scheduled across the United States from Jan. 24–30. Atlas Network partners throughout the country are participating by hosting a wide array of school choice events.

National School Choice Week has gained steadily increasing political support over the past few years. This year, 32 governors and 240 mayors and county leaders have issued official proclamations recognizing this week as National School Choice week in their states and localities, calling on residents to “explore and identify the best education options available for their children.”“The goal of National School Choice Week is to raise awareness among parents that when it comes to their children’s K-12 education, they have options,” said Andrew R. Campanella, president of National School Choice Week, in a press release. “National School Choice Week also provides an opportunity for people who believe that parents should have more options for their kids to have their voices heard. We are grateful that so many students, parents, teachers, schools, organizations, and elected officials are joining us in this positive week of events, activities, and celebrations.”
Atlas Network partner State Policy Network has organized a school choice “Tweet Up” on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. eastern time, designed to spread awareness of National School Choice Week throughout social media. By getting as many people as possible to post to Twitter and other social media platforms, the #SchoolChoice hash tag can attain trending status and reach many more parents and thought leaders throughout the United States.
